Restorative Steps: An Adaptive
Approach to Complex Cases of Elder Abuse
Description:
Guided by the voices of our clients, the Weinberg Center for Elder Justice has developed Restorative Steps, an adaptive intervention grounded in restorative principles to support safe reconnection with the person who caused harm. This workshop will explore the program’s application in complex elder abuse cases, including those involving medical concerns and cognitive impairment. Participants will learn about the specific restorative processes with which client-centered goals are established and achieved, ways of supporting autonomous decision-making, and how this approach may vary based on the type of harm being addressed and the setting in which reconciliation occurs. A case study will be presented to promote deep dialogue amongst participants and to illustrate the nuanced, real-world application of restorative practices in the field of elder justice.
