In Memoriam: Exploring Jewish History Through Memoirs

“Memories mean more to me than dresses,” wrote Anne Frank in what is perhaps the most

well-known diary ever written. For this young girl, recording her thoughts and feelings became a way to

endure one of the darkest moments in Jewish history. For the reader, memoirs allow us a glimpse of what

their writers experienced. We will read excerpts from a variety of Jewish memoirs from the early 18th century

to the present and reflecting the experiences of Jewish communities in Europe, Israel, and the US.

focusing mainly on short stories (to be given out ahead of time and read at home) that focus on

Jewish characters and themes. We will read a variety of stories ranging from the old to the new,

including works by Sholem Aleichem, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Anzia Yezierska, Nathan Englander,

Saul Bellow, and Cynthia Ozick. we will give a short introduction to the author, but the remainder of

class will be devoted to discussing the work and our reactions to it.

This semester our smorgasbord will include gems from William Faulkner, James Thurber, Elizabeth Bowen, Luigi Pirandello,

Film Foes, Fun and Fortitude

Sir Winston Churchill praised the stalwart character and humor of the British public in many of his famous speeches and this indomitable spirit was illustrated in the films of the late forties and fifties. This season we will take a look at that fortitude in the face of the foe in some exciting espionage, daring adventure and perilous spy stories of the period. These films celebrated and honored the heroes and heroines of WW2, and they remain true classics. We will see Paul Scofield and Virginia McKenna in Carve Her Name With Pride. Michael Redgrave in The Dam Busters .

Kenneth Moore in Reach for the Sky and discover lesser known English dramas of the war years. The stiff upper lip will crumble as we have fun along the way in the comedies based on memories of ENSA, the entertainment division of the Armed Forces. So join us in the final truibute to the Union Jack!

This is the class for you! We are exploring 110 years of vocal history in the western world -- hearing them sing, watching their films -- listening to the gossip! The only rule is that they must no longer be with us and that you want to know about them! Music Makes the World Go Round!

It has been said that music is the language of love. Our country has had and continues to have some of the most famous songwriters in the world and their music is enjoyed by almost everybody. Some of these songs were written by the likes of George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, Stephen Sondheim, and many others. Some of the singers who sang many of the great songs were Al Jolson, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Bing Crosby, and many more of the past few decades. You can visit practically any country in the world, and you will hear the American songbook. This semester we will discuss these people individually and perhaps the greatest of all the songwriters, Irving Berlin, a Jewish man whose standards are, to name a few, God Bless America, Easter Parade, and White Christmas -- enjoyed by people of all natiionalities and religions.

Join laughter therapist and geriatric counselor, Francine Shore for this healthful, innovative and fun cardio-vascular exercise.
Laughter Yoga (performed standing up or seated, no yoga mats) is based on yogic principles that involve laughter exercises,
intermittent deep breathing and playful chanting! In these challenging times, we need all the laughs we can get. This workshop
will explore how to laugh in the face of adversity, trust our humorous instincts, and be downright playful. It is not humor dependent,
so there are no jokes necessary. The many health benefits include strengthening the immune system, lowering blood pressure,
releasing endorphins, decreasing depression and anxiety, among others.

This class will outline the basic principles of crossword puzzle construction. It will begin with some basic crossword history,
but focus mainly on how to come up with a theme, a useable grid, and create the fill. Building puzzles will improve our solving skills.
At the end of the semester, the class will come up with one final puzzle to be submitted for publication in The New York Times.
